It varies quite widely with most needing a feed every 2 to 4 hours. The important thing to realise is that the time increases between feeds as the baby grows. A small baby who is breast fed can feed for 45 minutes then have a break of just over an hour, then want another feed. This is laughingly known as feeding every 2 hours. When you take into account the need to change a nappy and have something to eat yourself then you can understand why it's 5 in the afternoon, you feel like you haven't slept and you're still in PJs. If this is you, you might find the baby sleeps better in bed with you. Tuck them up in a bunny rug close by (making sure they are secure and won't smother or be pushed out of bed) and close your eyes whenever possible. I put my bub on the pillow next to me, or you can get a special 'bed' that goes in between your pillows.
The good news is that your baby will grow quickly with this feeding schedule
and a bigger tummy will mean more time between feeds. Expect a couple of months of sleep deprivation at least. |
