You will need to make quite a few decsions quickly. Here's a few tips:

  • Get a blood test to confirm your pregnancy.
  • Your first ultrasound will tell you how pregnant you are, just in case you're not sure
  • The doctor should also screen your blood for any concerns, such as low iron levels.
  • Get a recommendation for an obstetrician, hospital or birthing centre - the earlier the better so that you have some choice.
  • A personal recommendation really helps to find you the kind of doctor you want.
  • A male doctor who is calm and considerate can be even better than a female doctor. Choose based on personality rather than sex.
  • Obstetricians tend to work at certain hospitals, so one way to work out which obstetrician to have is by choosing the hospital. Call them and they will give you a list of their obstetricians.
  • In Australia you need to have private health insurance before you become pregnant. If you don't already have it, then there's not a lot of point worrying about that now.
  • Make a list of your goals before you have the baby. Very soon you might feel like doing nothing for a few weeks, due to morning sickness. Having a plan now may stop you fretting later.
