Dr. Klenner says the ‘vitamin C babies’ were outstanding as compared to the other babies delivered at the Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville, with which he was affiliated for many years.

“They were strong babies. No resuscitation was necessary with any of them. They fed better and they slept better. My program always included both mother and baby following up with vitamin C. We would have the newborns take 50 milligrams for a while and raise it gradually so that by six months they were getting half a gram. By one year, they were getting a full gram. We were giving it in the form of drops on the tongue. We always got a tremendous feedback. The ones who take it are so much healthier than those who don't."

This long-term observation by Dr. Klenner has been borne out by the work of Dr. Kalokerinos in Australia. Among the Aborigine population, there had been a tremendous incidence of sudden infant death. After 10 frustrating years without success, Dr. Kalokerinos finally traced the problem to a combination of physical stresses and a deficiency of ascorbic acid in the baby which left the infantile defences virtually powerless.

Through his use of vitamin C in high doses he was able to strengthen the immune system and reduce the crib death rate from almost 50 per cent to zero. His work earned him the Australian Medal of Merit for outstanding scientific research.

Along these very same lines, Dr. Wendell O. Belfield of San Jose has achieved exciting results in his veterinary practice:

"Dogs and cats, unlike human beings, produce their own vitamin C internally. However, the stress of pregnancy is so great that this production is drastically affected, setting the stage for sudden death, disease, litter runts and a whole host of problems. By supplementing the bitches with vitamin C, and then the puppies, too, we have virtually eliminated all these problems. Additionally, the whelping takes half the normal time."

Other observations by the experts:
• No miscarriages. Individuals who lose babies should try the high levels of ascorbic acid. This will prevent the haemorrhaging, which is an initial symptom of scurvy.
• There is no excessive bleeding after childbirth. The elasticity of the blood vessels is improved by the vitamin C.
• ''None of the vitamin C mothers had a single tooth cavity" says Dr. Klenner, "and to me that is very unusual."
• Vitamin C is a powerful detoxifies and neutralizes many of the chemicals, such as sprays, pesticides and drugs that can contribute to deformities in an unborn infant.
• In the case of pregnant diabetics, Dr. Kalokerinos found that the vitamin C worked better in combination with about 250 milligrams of zinc in the form of zinc sulfate daily.

Every Baby now born to Mothers who depend upon their diet as their sole source of daily Ascorbate (vitamin C) intake, are delivered after suffering 9 months of intrauterine subclinical scurvy. Read Dr. Irwin Stone's book, "THE HEALING FACTOR: ‘VITAMIN C’ AGAINST DISEASE", to understand how a deadly, but easily curable, human birth defect afflicts babies before they are born and throughout their lives thereafter, unless this birth defect is fully corrected by giving daily multi-gram doses of ascorbate (vitamin C).

Health writer Martin Zucker has written many books with doctors on natural healing, including Natural Hormone Balance for Women (Atria Books) and Reverse Heart Disease Now (Wiley).
