Until our little ones came along we didn’t think
about eating organic food. It’s expensive and was hard to get. Then when we
needed to feed our son his first food, it started to hit home. We decided to
make the food where we could and to choose organic pure foods like Bellamy’s
organic food as his porridge and Only Organics for travel. We stayed away from
mixed foods such as Heinz and began to buy fresh organics. We started with bagged organic apples, which are pretty easy to get from Coles and the taste and ripe flavour of them is unbeatable. The same goes for carrots, although we choose the smaller carrots rather than the organic juicing carrots. We are lucky that we have an organic store nearby, so now we go for meat as well as fruit and veg. Organic chicken is the stand out in meats, as the taste is just so much better, it’s easy to get and is not too expensive. In our experience often organic food does taste better as it is picked ripe more often, but not always. Organic celery was a bit of a shock, very tasty but quite bitter. In the debate about the benefits of organic food versus non-organic food the focus is often on how much damage non-organic food does to us when ingested. These concerns are of course amplified in babies due to their smaller size and immature digestion. The answer, we are told, is that the amounts of chemicals in food are small enough to be unlikely to harm us. This is a convenient argument which avoids the main reason to eat organic food and especially bio-dynamic foods. The main reason to eat organic foods is that they are simply better for you. They have higher levels of vitamins and minerals and are especially higher in antioxidants. By eating them you boost your general health. This is because organic foods are grown slowly in soil which relies upon natural methods such as crop rotation to produce good results. It may be smaller or have some blemishes on the surface but it is picked when ripe and not frozen and sprayed to ripen it. So during my second pregnancy I ate organic as often as possible. We now buy corn fed chicken and eggs (free range) and a range of fruit and vegetables regularly. We use bio-dynamic milk and yoghourt and we eat bread without preservatives. My first child grew out of his eczema by 18 months and my second child, whom I still breast feed, has no signs. As someone who has never been a cook, I have surprised myself by really being keen to prepare a meal when the food is fresh. I’m sure that I’m eating what nature intended and everything, even the broccoli, tastes and feels better. Comments (0)
